Since 31 March 2025, EVs with lithium-ion batteries ship as UN 3556 (Vehicle, lithium ion battery powered); lithium metal battery vehicles are UN 3557 and sodium-ion battery vehicles UN 3558. UN 3171 (Battery-powered vehicle) no longer covers lithium-battery vehicles. All are IMDG Class 9.

What is the battery state-of-charge limit?

From 1 January 2026, vehicles powered by batteries above 100 Wh must be delivered with battery SOC not exceeding 30% of rated capacity, or indicated charge not exceeding 25%. We drain and verify SOC before stuffing and record it in the DG declaration.

How are electric vehicles packed for ocean shipment?

Per IMDG packing instruction P912: the vehicle is secured in a strong outer packaging/crate, the battery must NOT be removed, and other parts may be removed only to fit the packaging. No performance packaging test is required; SP 405 may waive marking and labelling when the vehicle is not fully enclosed.
