NAIROBI, Kenya, October 4 – Amazon’s second Africa Web Services (AWS) development center has been opened in Nairobi, Kenya, with President William Ruto presiding over the event.

President Ruto stressed that the center highlights Kenya’s attractiveness as a major global investment destination on the African continent.

AWS is a widely used cloud computing platform that provides services such as computing power, storage, databases, machine learning, and analytics.

The Kenya center will be a key resource center for developers, providing documentation and resources needed to develop applications and services.

President Ruto said: “Kenya has emerged as one of the most exciting frontiers of global technological competitiveness, with huge revolutionary potential in all fields.”

The first hub of its kind in Africa is located in Cape Town, South Africa.

President Ruto stressed that the establishment of the center in Kenya will make a significant contribution to the creation of high-skilled employment opportunities in areas such as software development, cloud support, telecommunications and software engineering.

"AWS is not just about having a presence in the regional market; it is interested in strengthening its corporate citizenship by supporting a strong framework to anchor optimal interactions between governments, customers, startups and other partners."

He also noted that with Kenya’s ongoing digitalization initiatives, the AWS Center will further strengthen the efforts of various sectors.

“Across Kenya, across sectors, communities and all levels of government, ordinary people are experiencing the transformative potential of digital technology, thanks to the possibilities that AWS unlocks in developing solutions and bringing opportunities closer,” he said.

President Ruto is committed to implementing policies that create an enabling environment for the digital technology ecosystem and ensure long-term sustainability.

During a trip to New York in September 2023, he pledged to create an enabling environment for potential technology investors.
