MSC's AGL starts operating Angola port

2023-10-13

Africa Global Logistics (AGL), part of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has secured rights to container and conventional terminals at Angola’s Lobito port after launching an international tender in January.

As part of the new concession, which will take effect in the first quarter of 2024, AGL will take over the employees of the Empresa Portuária do Lobito EP port authority.

AGL said the project, estimated to cost €100 million, will improve connectivity in the region and facilitate trade, with the port involved in the development of agricultural projects, construction sites and tertiary services companies.

As Angola’s second largest port, Lobito will play a strategic role in the global energy transition, becoming the first Atlantic gateway to the Copper Belt region and contributing to the transportation of copper and cobalt to international markets.

The port of Lobito has a quay depth of 14 meters and direct access to the sea, allowing Angola to accommodate large-capacity ships. AGL will manage the container and multi-purpose terminal, with 1,200 meters of quay, storage area and handling equipment with a capacity of 12,000 teu.

AGL was born out of Bolloré Africa Logistics MSC's $6.3 billion acquisition of the company earlier this year. It has 250 logistics and maritime establishments, 22 port and railway concessions, 66 dry ports and 2 river terminals.
